The Highland Complex Anomaly

The abundance of sapphires in Sri Lanka is not a coincidence; it is the direct result of a 500-million-year-old tectonic collision. During the Pan-African Orogeny (the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent), immense heat and pressure metamorphosed the earth's crust.

This created a distinct geological belt known as the Highland Complex, which runs diagonally across the center of Sri Lanka. Over 90% of the island's gem deposits are found within this highly crystalized, Precambrian rock formation.

Primary vs. Secondary Deposits: Gems are rarely mined from their original host rock (Primary Deposits) in Sri Lanka. Instead, over millions of years, tropical rains weathered the Highland Complex mountains. The heavy corundum crystals washed down into the valleys and ancient riverbeds, settling into dense gravel layers.
